Experience: David B. Calzone has more than 35 years of experience practicing in the areas of employment discrimination, labor litigation, labor arbitration, mediation, appellate litigation, and complex/class action litigation. Since 2013, he has been the founding Member of Calzone Mediations LLC, a firm providing alternative dispute resolution services. From 1996 to 2013, he was a Director and founding Shareholder of Vercruysse Murray & Calzone, P.C., a firm specializing in labor and employment law, immigration law and business litigation in the Detroit Metropolitan area. He was an associate and shareholder with Butzel Long from 1981 to 1996.
Education: Mr. Calzone is a graduate of The University of Michigan (A.B. with high distinction and highest honors, 1978, Phi Beta Kappa) and The University of Michigan Law School (J.D., magna cum laude, 1981), where he was inducted into the legal honorary, the Order of the Coif. He also attended New York University School of Law, where he was appointed to the Law Review.
Honors and Memberships: Mr. Calzone is listed in The Best Lawyers in America (Management Labor Lawyers – listed since 2001), Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business (listed since 2005), Michigan Super Lawyers (listed since 2006), and Michigan Super Lawyers Top 100 (2009-11, 2013). He served as the Chair of the governing Council of the Labor and Employment Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan from 2007-2008 and served in other capacities on the Council from 2000-2009. He is also a member of the American Bar Association (Labor and Employment Law Section, Employee Rights and Responsibilities Committee) and the Federal Bar Association (Labor Law Section). Mr. Calzone is a Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers and the Michigan State Bar Foundation and a member of the American Employment Law Council. In 2017, Mr. Calzone was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Labor and Employment Section of the State Bar of Michigan. The award is given to an attorney who has made major contributions to the practice of labor and employment law, reflects the highest ethical principles, has advanced the development of labor and employment law, has a long-established commitment to excellence, and is recognized and respected by constituents in the labor and employment community.
