DAVID B. CALZONE
David Calzone has more than 40 years of experience practicing in the areas of employment discrimination, labor litigation, arbitration, mediation, appellate litigation, and complex/class action litigation. In 2013, he founded Calzone Mediations LLC, a firm providing alternative dispute resolution services. From 1996 to 2013, he was a Director and founding Shareholder of Vercruysse Murray & Calzone, P.C. He was an associate and shareholder with Butzel Long from 1981 to 1996. Since 2019, Mr. Calzone has served as a neutral Hearing Officer on Title IX and sexual misconduct matters involving students and staff at a major university.
Mr. Calzone is a graduate of The University of Michigan (A.B. with high distinction and highest honors, 1978, Phi Beta Kappa) and The University of Michigan Law School (J.D., magna cum laude, 1981), where he was inducted into the legal honorary, the Order of the Coif. He also attended New York University School of Law, where he was appointed to the Law Review.
Mr. Calzone is listed in The Best Lawyers in America (since 2001), Michigan Super Lawyers (since 2006), and Michigan Super Lawyers Top 100 (2009-11, 2013). He is a Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers and the Michigan State Bar Foundation. Mr. Calzone served on the governing Council of the Labor and Employment Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan from 2000-2009 and as Chair from 2007-2008. He is also a member of the American Bar Association (Labor and Employment Law Section, Employee Rights and Responsibilities Committee) and the Federal Bar Association (Labor Law Section).
In 2017, Mr. Calzone was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Labor and Employment Section of the State Bar of Michigan. The award is given to an attorney who has made major contributions to the practice and development of labor and employment law, reflects the highest ethical principles, has a long-established commitment to excellence, and is recognized and respected by the labor and employment community.
Mr. Calzone has been a featured speaker on a variety of employment law topics for the Institute for Continuing Legal Education, the Labor and Employment Law Sections of the American Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan; the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the State Bar of Michigan; The University of Michigan Law School, the University of Detroit Mercy Law School, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Michigan Employment Relations Commission, and HR Hero. He is also co-editor and co-author of Employment Litigation in Michigan, 1st and 2d Editions (ICLE 1999, 2004).
